Alternating case marches through letters only: the first letter becomes uppercase, the next lowercase, and so on, while spaces and punctuation keep their places. It is playful on purpose—not a substitute for readable product copy or long-form writing work.

How the conversion works

Spaces, digits, and symbols do not advance the upper/lower switch. “hi-there!” becomes “Hi-ThErE!” because the hyphen and exclamation point are ignored for counting. Emoji are left unchanged and likewise do not flip the pattern, so reactions in a sentence stay intact. Version numbers inside a line keep their digits while letters around them continue the alternating rhythm.

When alternating case fits

Use alternating case for memes, mockups, or attention-grabbing drafts. It is a poor fit for legal copy, accessibility-critical UI, or anything that must stay easy to read aloud. Screen readers and dyslexia-friendly styles fare better with sentence or Title Case. Creative teams sometimes mock tone of voice by flipping a slogan before a campaign critique.

Getting back to readable text

Alternating case is easy to overuse. When you need a calm version of the same words, convert again with sentence case or Title Case instead of shipping the playful form. A second conversion to a readable style is usually better than leaving alternating case in production UI.

Frequently asked questions

Does alternating case start with uppercase?

Yes. The first letter becomes uppercase, then letters alternate lower, upper, and so on.

Do spaces reset the pattern?

No. Spaces are skipped, so the pattern continues across words.

Are emoji affected?

Emoji are left unchanged and do not flip the upper/lower toggle.

Can I get a readable version afterward?

Yes. Convert again with sentence case or Title Case, or press Undo to restore the original.
